Thirty-Sixth Annual Awards Celebration

May 4, 2009

by Donna Welch

The College of Education and Human Development held its thirty-sixth Honors Reception on Monday, May 4, 2009 at the Homer Hitt Alumni Center. Chancellor Timothy Ryan welcomed the honorees and their guests and assisted Dean James Meza, Jr. in presenting the two Outstanding Alumni Awards.

Ms. Michelle Bertram Douglas, Principal of Edward Hynes Charter School, was presented with the Outstanding Alumna Award, and Dr. Joseph H. Murry, Jr., Principal of Holy Cross High School, received the Outstanding Alumnus Award. Both are graduates of the College of Education and Human Development and have done an excellent job in representing the University and College in the New Orleans community.

During his presentation to Ms. Douglas, Dean Meza stated, “Michelle has earned an enviable reputation based on her genuine love of learning, teaching and leadership. She is an excellent ambassador for the University of New Orleans and the College of Education and Human Development.”

Ms. Douglas received her Bachelor of Arts in elementary education with an emphasis in early childhood education in 1990 and a Master’s of Education in curriculum and instruction in 1995.

Dr. Murry, who received his Ph.D. in education in 1995, has been faced with the many challenges associated with alumnusmoving Holy Cross High School to its new location near the UNO campus.

“Dr. Murry had the daunting task of reopening Holy Cross following Hurricane Katrina,” remarked Dean Meza. “Today, with construction underway, Joe and his staff have managed to not only ensure the continuance of the Holy Cross High School tradition, but to also revitalize the Gentilly neighborhood surrounding the school.”

Also in attendance was the founding dean of the College of Education, Dr. Milton Ferguson. He provided a history of the College then presented his namesake award, the “Milton Ferguson Faculty Award,” to Dr. Yvelyne Germain‐McCarthy.

germain“Dr. Germain‐McCarthy’s courses are infused with problem-solving exercises that challenge teacher candidates to think beyond the walls of the classroom and become leaders in mathematics,” remarked Dr. Ferguson.

Dr. Germain‐McCarthy, a full professor, has been a faculty member in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction since 1993.

There were a number of other awards presented during the event. The are listed in a table at the bottom of this web page.
